DESCRIPTION OF THE EVENT:

One of the Lemkos' legend deals with a story of the sleeping army. Allegedly, the army was sleeping in full gear along with their esquires and cavalry in the castle vaults at the foot of Saint Jadwiga’s mountain. The Lemkos are still considered to be a very mysterious ethnic group, though they come as fourth in Poland, as though they were those legendary sleepy army. It is often due to the past resettling actions that led to them losing their cultural identity with the land they occupy.

The performance of “I am the memory” is a journey inside history, a journey inside the magical world of Lemkos legends and traditions, return to the times when each mountain and stone told their story and there was persistence and spirit behind it all. The performance was developed on the brink of the artistic and social sphere, engaging theatre professionals and local community. There are professional artists and the locals from cities and the area involved in the project. Together they investigated the history of Lemkos. As a result of the cooperation they created a performance merging the elements of dramatic theatre, dance theatre and multimedia show.

Prior to the performance there is going to be a 5-day workshop organised with the participation of children and youth, who will later perform on the stage. The project is carried out within the framework of Przestrzenie Sztuki Project.
